Friday 7th October 1932 - Adelphi Hotel, LiverpoolDearest darling Herbert,What excitement we have had! Mother and I boarded our train on Thursday. The conductor was a charming man. I swear he held my hand for just a moment too long. The weather was terrible, of course, but we were heading for the sun, and neither of us cared one jot. Then the thunderstorm started, which terrified Mother. She shrieked like she had seen a dozen mice with every rum...
Outstanding reviews
This is really excellent--sophisticated, strong, rich, humorous, poignant, geez I'm running out of adjectives. And hard-hitting, though with gloves. I'm glad you won the week's prize. I'll be looking for your stories.
Thank you that's so kind.
Congratulations! Dorothea and Mr. Morris are captivating characters! This was such a fun, yet thought provoking read! You effortlessly take readers from the light correspondence of two young people into a larger yet subtle conversation about class difference, poverty, privilege, and marital status.
Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Congratulations, Wendy! I loved how reality seeped through the flowery speech of the letters and told a story of its own.
Thank you, I'm really pleased you liked it.
SLAYSLAYSLAYSLAYSLAYSLAYSLAY THE DAY GOWL
A very clever story which must have taken much thinking and consideration to write. Not as easy as it looks. The use of language speaks of the times. Very impressive and refreshing. Felt I was in ''Remains of the Day'' territory.
Wow, lovely comments thank you so much
Revealing stream of letters.Congrats on the win.🤗
Thank you so much.
Congrats! Love this story, it 100% deserves this win!
Thank you so much!
Loved the two sided conversations, and the effort that goes into making a story funny without conversation is very well done.
I say that an entertaining story about a gold digger. Your story is not only well done in plot, but descriptive and delightful to read. Well done! funny too.
This is for my Jrotc class! Donate today or buy popcorn! Please and thank you. https://instaraise.com/tahlequahjrotc/popcorn/aliahturner?a=17
OH MY GOD I"M SOBBING
I absolutely loved this. A class act! Please pass on my sympathies to Dorothea!
This was a wonderful read. I enjoyed the back and forth between these two characters and discovering their personalities over letters. It reminds me of current day text messaging. It was interesting to see her lose interest immediately after he revealed that he would not inherit the money this showing her true intentions for being interested in Herbert.
Hi Wendy!Congratulations on the shortlist! I admire your control of language most of all from this story and thought you characterized everyone quite well. Oh, how it is to be a heartbroken friend zoned human. Still, perhaps it’s all working out the way it was meant to. Nice work
Thank you
Excellent loved it
Thank you!
Absolutely loved this (have actually stayed at the Adelphi in Liverpool myself). I always enjoy the epistolary story form because it opens up your characters so perfectly, you can almost see inside them... and you have nailed it.
Thank you, that's fab, I'd love to see the real thing!
Hi Wendy,I enjoy historical fiction and though this story may be a little too subtle for my full comprehension, I wonder if you've ever read any Imogen Robertson? I think you would enjoy her style of writing, as well as her stories.
Thanks, Ken, it's not a name I know, but I will have a look. Regards Wendy
Wow, this was a really good story!
Thank you!
