The aromatic smell of roast pork awakened me from my mid-morning slumber. I had drifted off while sat against a wall during the morning break from reading, and was slow to open my eyes, clutching tightly to the last moments of sleep.“Are you hungry?” An unfamiliar voice asked – jolting me awake. For the next several moments, I rubbed my eyes and stared at the unfamiliar surroundings feeding my confusion. Nothing was familiar to me, plus I couldn’t recognise a single face lingering on the street corner or sat opposite me o...

Outstanding reviews

I think historical fiction of any kind is always so difficult and you did such a great job. The dialogue really popped for me as well. Well done.
Thank you, Kevin. This was my first attempt at a topic I have a great interest in, so that means a lot to me.
So THIS is what men are always thinking about!I enjoyed the history and the attention to detail in the flashback. The time travel would have been a more interesting surprise/contrast if we got at least a little taste of the narrator's life before going to sleep at the very beginning. Thank you for sharing it and nice work!
Audrey,Thanks for reading and commenting. I wanted to pose the question as to whether Spurinna was a time traveller or a true soothsayer - a character similar to how Nostradamus is perceived. His confused state of mind hopefully negated a backstory. It's all about here and now in his waking moments. That said and done, this was merely a fictitious glimpse at one of the most historical days in time.
Great historical tale!
Thank you, Jonathan.
Historical. Always good to read about Rome and its politics. That year, my ancestors were in their caves, not mud houses, minding their own business. Congrats.
Philip, Thanks for reading and commenting.
Welcome.
Congrats on your first shortlist!! 🎉 I'm sure no-one will be surprised to see this shortlisted!
Thank you, Khadija.I am very happy to have a topic I have great interest in, be among the shortlist of wonderful talent here on Reedsy.
Well written. This story presents a good range of imagery and detail to build a sense of a puzzle, and a glimpse of history. Realistic and evocative. This reader anticipates more fiction written by this author.
Julie,Many thanks for your great feedback.I've always wanted to write historical fiction. I also have a great interest in Ancient Rome, so this seemed the right opportunity to blend the two. Thanks for reading and commenting.
I enjoy reading stories that keep my interest, and I don't keep glancing at how much longer the story is. Yours was intriguingly written and kept me engaged. Well done.
Karen,Thank you for your welcomed feedback. So glad you liked it.
I love it when my basic knowledge of Roman/Greek gods is put to good use! I also like the term "field to table," it's always fun to see modern ideas used in the past, especially when they could've existed back then too.
Kailani,Thank you for taking the time to read and comment on my story. The Romans taught us a lot, so "field to table" could have been a tag line back then. However, I think everything was field to table 2,000 years ago.
What a great personalized spin on a classic event, and a rich sense of time and place! And roast pork hooked me immediately😉!
Thank you, Martin. As a non-meat eater, I take that as a great compliment. I'm also pleased to have briefly transported you back 2,000 years to a fascinating time and place.
Oops — hope I didn’t come off insensitively. Mom was a master of the roast, and the smell is a strong sense-memory stimulus for me. You did a wonderful job in historical recreation. I was once astonished to learn Marcelle Proust was fond of a certain modern sexual verb/declarative, and imagining him dropping an F-bomb in a literary salon makes me appreciate the humanization of fictionalized history. You did it well.
Thank you, Martin. No sensitivities were hurt in the making of your comments. :)
🤣👍
🤣👍
Kevin,Thank you so much for your great insight and suggestions. I have actioned them using my own interpretation of the words. Plus, I changed the ending a little. Hopefully, it is improved - as you thought it might.I do have a love of Roman history, so I'm greatly pleased that it shone through.Once again, thank you for taking so much time to read and comment.
No problem Sol, I just reread it there and I think it flows much better, great work.
Thanks for your great input.
Congratulations Sol on the shortlist!
Thank you, Kevin.A big shout out to you for your great suggestions.
Good historical sense. Thanks for reading 'When Falls the Night'And 'Cinnamon Cookie Cure All'Ooh. Nice to see this one on the shortlist. Congratulations! 😊🥳
Thank you, Mary.A little creative license was thrown in, as well.
We all need that license now and then.
