Burt Brain

Content

There’s no sound on earth quite like a bird flying into a sliding glass door. Unlike the white noise of mass extinctions and vanishing rainforests, the singular thud of delicate avian bones against shatter-resistant Duraplex glass is impossible to ignore. It's the sound of the natural and man-made worlds colliding, like the off-key fervor of a bronze temple gong struck by a fresh-faced initiate. ...

Outstanding reviews

This has touches of light humor that set off its deeper sweet meaning. Really enjoyable. Deserved win!
Thanks so much! I'm loving this welcoming community of writers.
Very true. Couldn't have said it better. Congrats Shawn!
Excellent choice of name for the protagonist. I love how quirky this tale is—giving whiskey to birds? Brilliant. Congrats, in any case 🥳
Thank you thank you. Happy this one came together. Thanks for reading!
"There’s no sound on earth quite like a bird flying into a sliding glass door." Great opening line and one that I agree with. If you've ever heard that sickening smash, you remember it, so you had me here. Congratulations on your win. I'm looking forward to reading more of your work.
Really great story. Your descriptions are so colorful and so spot on, I can picture the whole scene right down to the plugged in phone on the bedside table. I love Burt's attitude of defiant relaxation. It's a little sweet, a little sad and a little funny-the perfect balance. Well done!
Thank you so much, Julie. I'm so glad Burt landed with so many readers. Thanks for reading!
Funny and well-written. Lovely. A very deserved win. Congratulations.
Thanks so much for the read and the kind words. It was fun to write!
Of course!
This was a nice story. Burt was an interesting character and I thought the bird was cute. Not sure if it’s a good idea to give alcohol to birds but I had a good laugh reading it. The story was interesting but I recommend telling us more about Burt’s life so that we can empathize with him a little more.
Thanks for the feedback. I'd love to dive into Burt even more. I loved your story too (the bird alarm was a great idea!). Thanks for reading. Hope to read more of your writing soon as well.
I look forward to reading more of your stories as well. Congratulations on the win! :)
It's no worse than giving caffeine to cats...
What a fun and flighty story you wrote! I can tell you're a fan of alliteration and quite at ease with the keyboard too! I really enjoyed reading this. It gave me a laugh when I really needed it. Please keep up the excellent work :)
So that's how you do a boy meets bird story!
Hahahahahaha, best comment so far. Thanks for reading, John.
Well done, Shawn. This is a good story, very light and comical. Yet almost imperceptibly, it introduces the reader to varying depths of a character with a lot to share.
Thanks, Miles. It was fun to show glimpses of Burt in such a ridiculous situation. Thanks so much for reading!
Such a lovely story - well done! The grandma's first aid protocol was spot on. You emphasized just the right details to just the right degree. Congratulations on a well-deserved win!
Thank you for the kind words, Kate. It was fun to write, and I'm glad so many people are enjoying Burt's bird first aid! Thanks for reading.
You deserved the win! This is amazing!
Thanks so much, Emmie! I'm loving everyone in this chat. What a great group of writers. Excited for more in 2021. Thanks for reading.
Me, too! 2021 is going to be the year I get so many of my goals done, writing-wise. I hope you have a great new year!
I hope so too
:)
I thought you did a good job of describing. The ending sounded right.
Thanks, Bonnie. Endings are tough! Thanks for reading.
Hi.. I like ur story..you do love birdplease ? react to mine. Reason why i had to leave
Good job! You put so much interest and emotion to a prompt about just taking care of a bird. Very well deserved win!
Even though this story stands really well on its own in the short form, I'm left wanting to know more about Burt, and to learn why Linda left, and to hear more anecdotes about Flo. Well done, and congratulations on your win!
Wow it was like I could see the entire story.A well-deserved win!!
Well written, sir. Congratulations!
I love the funny touches that pulled me in, and calling the character Burt dealing with a bird reminded me of Sesame Street. I didn't know to expect the bird to live or not!
Love it. Good win.
Thanks so much, Estelle!
A well deserved win. It’s one of the best submissions I’ve read so far on Reedsy. I loved it! Anyta from Ireland
Wow, thanks Anyta! What a great compliment. I'm loving this community of supportive writers. Thanks so much for reading.
