The boy peered beyond the river to the desert beyond. Somewhere in all that desolation, a monstrous city teaming with souls awaits. He could still go there. His option to cross the river is still on the table. Then there was the alternative. Stay with the ferryman, learn from him, and awaken the thing inside him. Interesting take on the story, although I didn't get a real sense WHY Phineas was chosen (maybe that is a tale for another time), but I didn't understand what was so special about him or if this was more of a random process. If so, what is the random process? Also, I felt you were TELLING more than SHOWING in this story, especially the beginning. Still, I really enjoyed the story and think it has a potential to be a part of a larger narrative. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for the feedback, sir. This was a spontaneous act, and I'll apply some edits later. You are correct that there is a larger narrative at work here. This story was a short prequel to my novel "We Come Bearing Curses." Just wanted to toy with an idea and see how it hit the readers. I really appreciate your feedback! I'm still new at writing, and this helps me improve.
Great! Keep it up. It was intriguing. I was also wondering about why you chose Gehenna (actual Hell) over Hades (Greek place of the Dead) for the story. I would be interested in reading more. Thanks for sharing.

I knew Gehenna was an actual place just outside of Jerusalem. I thought it was interesting that you used it. I also caught the Enoch reference. I think it's cool that you are mixing and matching the cultures.
I really want to make my work inclusive and equitable, something that Lovecraft lacked in his writing. Much of this series will be inspired by his work.
