Owl Academy

Content

Delilah watched, smiling, as this year's batch of fresh students filed into her classroom, guided by an older student who had not, if he knew how to follow the rules, answered a single one of the many questions the teenagers no doubt had. Once all six children were in the room, the door closed, suddenly and with a small snap. Catherine and Isabella, names Delilah knew from the files she had studied carefu...

Outstanding reviews

I love this story. I teach high school math, but I have an advisory group that I work with all four years of their time here. I am really looking for short stories that will capture the interest and imagination of my students and help them begin to enjoy reading. I love how this points out so many failing of our current educational system. We see filling the vessel as success when in reality we need to find the spark that lights the lamp.
This needs to be a book and movie.
Working on it :P

Thank you! Some stories write themselves, and this was one of them. I felt like I really knew those kids and their teacher by the end of it.
I loved the sentence " A beautiful owl, surprisingly well proportioned and shaded for the age of the child who had created it, a clear sign of talent that had been snuffed out by teachers and parents who were more concerned about Mikey's inability to sit still and pay attention than anything else." How often in education has talent and creativity been snuffed out for various 'adult' reasons. This is a great story. Well done.
Thank you! I really enjoyed this one!
This is my favourite of the bunch this week. Just love how well it flows and all the characters are fleshed out and believable. Well done!Interestingly the protagonist in my story is also called Delilah.
Thank you! When it comes to short stories, I use whatever character name first springs to mind--'Delilah' must have been floating in the creative air!
I'm exactly the same! I never know my characters names when I start writing. They just materialise when it comes time to name them!
Yes! And the moment the name appears, I can also see them more clearly in my mind too.
So, I was hooked right from the start, the atmosphere you wrote had me by the throat, and by the end I was telling myself that I need the full book! Well done, this was well written and your imagination was on full display!
Thank you! I appreciate the feedback. Sometimes the story comes to me easily, and this was one of them!
This is really sweet. Great story, Tamarin.
Thank you! This one came to me so easily, which is usually a sign that I'm on to something.
Clearly. You’re welcome. Will you write more based on this or is it a one off?
I need to think about it a bit. I may test out the idea of writing a book on this topic. Or I might add more stories here on the topic.
That would be cool either way.
Thanks, Graham! It looks like you have written some ongoing series, perhaps I will take a leaf out of your book and give it a shot.
Very touching. Each one has already learned much.
Thank you! I really enjoyed writing this one. I am glad it has been appreciated.
Not that I am any good at predicting and I am not a judge but I see the makings of a winner in this story.Ooh! So happy I actually called it this time. Congrats on the shortlist!👏👏👏
Oh, that would be amazing! And it would be my first win.
This is such a sweet story and wonderful glimpse into a magical world I want to know so much more about! I'd read an entire Owl Academy series - I want to get to know each of these already distinct and interesting characters and see how they grow, how their owls change (and now I want an owl of my own!). Really lovely work!
Thank you! This was a brand new idea I had when I saw the prompt, but I am genuinely thinking of trying to write a longer form book/series on the topic.
