It is 4:06 PM on December 31st, and my mother is sobbing at the kitchen table. She is wearing a peculiar type of party hat, one with a hidden button underneath the brim. When this button is activated, a string of lights declares the year, 1993, above her head in a semi-circle. While my mother cries, the sprigs of tinsel on the hat bob comically. I do not laugh, although I want to, just a little bit. Instead, I watch her, studying her ruddy cheeks with a detached fascinatio...
Outstanding reviews
Wow, what a profile of a person. I loved the parallels and differences between the daughter and the mother. It made their persons stronger by the contrast and similarities.
Wonderful job. Congratulations on the win. I would have written those two sentences with exclamation points normally, but your story commands a certain beautiful flatness and exclamation points feel like a betrayal.
Your strong characterizations and illuminating glimpses into individual lives immersed me in your story. This is especially impressive, because of the word count limitations. You have a gift for conveying details in fewer words. Congratulations!
that was exquisite! i got more than what i expected. the story kept getting better with each word i read. a much deserved win for pure talent.
I love this story. It is evident that you are a Real Writer. If I were competent at navigating this website I would look up your profile and see what books you have written.
Hi, Helen! First of all, thank you for the kind words. If it helps, I am not sure how to navigate this website either, but I do in fact do other writing and I am looking into having some of my stories put into an ebook format. :) Thanks for reading.
Hi Helen and Emily! If you have the time, it would be great to hear your feedback on how we could make this site more easy for you to navigate. You can send over any issues or feedback to [email protected] — we're always looking for ways to improve! :)
Great characterisation and nice story!
Well, I loved it. A great portrait of a broken mother and daughter. So refreshing and honest and void of pretension. Hands down one of the top 5 pieces I've read on this platform. Well done and Congrats on the win!!
This story definitely deserved the prize, it was excellently written.Every single paragraph left me in awe looking forward to what would happen next. Congratulations.
The title is my favorite part. It's funny and intriguing and snapshots the whole quirky story in five words. But it pales in comparison to the majestic quirkiness of the real story. Deserved win!
Congratulations 🎊🎉
Poignant and well written. Congratulations
Truly well done. Congratulations!
Wonderful story. Congratulations
Superb story, congratulations!
Well done, captured me at the beginning. Well deserved and congrats!👏🏻
Great characterizations and imagery to set the scene. I could feel like I was there!
Congratulations!! Nicely done :)
Very insightful writing, and paints such a vivid picture, well done on your win.
Cute, sad story. Great job on your win.😁
A very moving and realistic rendering of how holidays affect us our whole lives. I have some of your feelings about New Year's Eve and I gave up trying to have a "Happy New Year" kind of night a long time ago. Now I will remember your story every New Year. Excellent writing.
