Prison Chip

Content

I am awake. What is this cell? Blackness, emptiness, where am I? How long have I been here?"Ok, Congressman Jones, Dr. Spears, now for the final leg of the University tour. I am Professor Colin Shelley; please step through here. You are now to witness the jewel in our crown. The fruits of our exploration into organ on a chip."Shelley led them through the lab...

Outstanding reviews

Well ! This is very clever. Great concept and the intercut dialogue adds an extra dimension. It became clear what washappening but the ending really makes a tragedy of the poor thinker's story! Darkly humourous and very intelligent writing. Hats off to you sir!
Thanks so much for the kind words Derrick. It means a lot
Why do I get the feeling the "donors" weren't made unaware that parts of them were being removed? Sounds like the hospitals are sneakily slicing off bits of people. If they see brains on the floor as an inconsequential "mess" it doesn't seem too far off that they wouldn't care about sampling organs without consent.Horrifying thoughts but well executed. Good job Tom!
Thanks so much for feedback Kailani. I really appreciate it
What do the slices of animal brains say? With biological similarities, fear response, enjoyment, what is the difference between the dog, the dolphin, the pig? Very deep complex issues in this story- thanks!
Thanks for reading, Marty. I appreciate your comments very much
That poor slice of brain. This is such an interesting story with so many ethical considerations. Where does conscious life begin? How much right to we have to pay ‘God’ in these situations? What happens when the ‘wrong’ people get excited by the technology? Thank for the thought provoking story.
Thanks so much reading, Michelle. Your comments mean a lot
Tom, this made me so contemplative. It reminded me of a book I was reading called “Unwholly”. It makes you question the idea of consciousness. Here you have all the fundamental “ingredients” of life, but when do we recognize it as an equal entity? The prison aspect was intriguing. Maybe I got too introspective, but I spiraled into the contemplation that all life is imprisoned (such as by our physical bodies) On another note! I think Mary Shelley would be so proud of what you’ve done here 😊Well done! 👏👏👏
Thanks so much for reading, Hannah. I think I hoped it would be a thought provoking one, so your comments make me happy. The consciousness stuff interests me a lot. I have some experience in the tech described in the story and I have always wondered about where some of it could lead. Thanks again

Thanks for reading Michal. I had to Google the Ship of Theseus. Great reference. I shall squirrel it away it for later use 😂
Congrats on the shortlist!
Thanks so much Michal. It made me so happy.
'organ on a chip' hope it not the latest snack.🍪Congrats on the shortlist. Thanks for liking my cookie story.
Haha. Thanks for reading Mary
This is possibly the most horrifying story I have ever read. End of. The mind positively shudders. Thank you for writing.
Wow, I definitely appreciate that feedback 😳 thanks so much for reading
Congrats. Consent matters to many much. We are in democrazy.
Thanks so much for reading Philip. The shortlisting meant a lot to me
More success.
I love the use of dialogue here, Tom. You knocked me out with that ending. Good job.
Thanks so much for reading. I was pleased with the concept.
It is so interesting how you got us to relate to a bit of tissue that isn't fully human so that we felt such a sense of sadness when it was killed. Good story! Bravo!
Woohoo!! Congratulations!! 🎉🎉🎉
Thanks AnneMarie. That listing honestly means so much to me. You never know if you're anywhere near the right levels.
I know the feeling, but you are a wonderful writer and this is a great story! Soak up the validation and celebrate! 🎉🎉🎉

Thanks so much for the detailed feedback, Bella. I was proud of the concept in this one. The ethical stuff seemed to just spew out of it. Thanks for reading. It means a lot. I'll read yours in a bit
This is a very horrifying reminder that we will never truly know if living things that can’t speak have consciousnesses of some sort and I love it. I really feel for this little brain in a jar (or rather a chip) who was treated as nothing more than one of a thousand. Love all the other subtle hints that some shady stuff is going on, like the ambiguity of who the donors are.
Thanks for reading, Luciano. I really appreciate the analysis.
Fantastic sci-fi, with convincing tech backgrounding and a very timely message about our contemporary attitudes toward humanity. Exceptionally well-told and chilling.
Thanks so much Martin. That's made my Sunday
This is really chilling. These questions about consciousness and scientific experiments really terrify me. This must have been rather complex to write, I had to really concentrate in the first few lines but it was totally worth it. Brilliantly done!Really interesting take on the prompt, way scarier than a prison cell I think!
Thanks so much, Jessie. I have some experience with the type of tech (not THAT much experience :) ) , so it was ok for me to write it down. Glad it all made sense. Thanks again for reading
So you’re not the real life professor Shelley?
Haha, I can proudly say I am not
Tom... Ew!!! I mean this in the best way. What an absolutely awful and fascinating concept. To be even slightly aware that you are trapped in a chip, makes me so uncomfortable. I loved this take on the prompt, somehow being on a chip is even worse than like a standard prison cell. I can't imagine how isolating it would be, and I don't want to! Great job evoking this emotion. Also, its not a concept that really feels far fetched with today's technology. What good and evil humans could do with something like this. Great story, thank you!
Thanks Danie. The tech described is pretty close actually. Particularly the heart stuff. I have seen a few talks on it. I thought it would be cool to stretch it. Thanks so much for reading.

Thanks so much AnneMarie. I pleased with the concept, so glad it came across correctly. Thanks again for reading
The concept was really awesome! Can't say I've considered something like this but I'm sure someone is doing it in a lab somewhere. And if not, I could certainly see it being explored in the future. Just hope my brain isnt on the chopping block! 🧠🔪
