It was nine-fifteen and later than usual when Mrs Prettejohn shuffled into Donald Musgrove’s dining room clutching a tray with his boiled egg and soldiers, and a small pot of Earl Grey. “Your all-day breakfast, Professor.” “Very droll, Mrs P,” he said, wafting his hand at the cluttered table as he read his mail. “Over there’s fine.” The housekeeper hovered in abeyance to watch her dishevelled employer decapitate his egg and offer her culinary criticism.&nb...
Outstanding reviews
So enjoyable! Reminds me in tone of Edmund Crispin’s great wryly semi-farcical Fen mysteries! Great job! And I just ordered a decoupaged toilet seat!
Hey Martin,Thank you for reading story and making the flattering comparison to Edmund; I always relish a spirited rollercoaster ride and love a farcical adventure too.I’m pleased you enjoyed my tale, however I hope you haven’t spent too much on one of Piero’s loo seats; the vintage items cost a fortune. Take careHH
I’d love to see Hugh Laurie given a shot at Gervase Fen, maybe even reuniting with Stephen Fry as Inspector Humbleby.
Yes! Great casting call, Martin :)
Had a buddy at work who’d help me cast imaginary movie reboots of old TV shows, and I do periodic mock posters of films the folks in one of my vintage mystery FB groups would like to see.
That sounds like a fun idea, I’d love to see your posters, I bet they’re terrific :)
Plastered over the cracks. Same as bowl.
All in a day’s work, it seems :)
I've never thought people would be interesting in the kind of toilets dictators used, but you made me curious to learn more. Good job!
Hey Kailani,Thank you for reading my story and sharing your thoughts. I pleased you enjoyed it and hope you you’ll look forward to my future submissions…Take careHH
This is a highly original and enjoyable piece. Great characters and hopefully more adventures to come. A touch of Tom Sharpe about it. Very creative.

Loved this~ and found it refreshing to read multisylible words (?) ant the bits of humor and mystery. Have you considered making these two and their exploits into a novel? A series? xo
Hi Patricia,Thank you for reading my story and leaving your positive feedback. I’m pleased you enjoyed it and appreciate your suggestion about extending the idea. I’ve got to admit I hadn’t thought about developing the couple’s adventure but now you mention it…. It’s got potential and it’d be great fun to try.Take careHH
The creativity surrounding the concept in this story is astounding. Either amazing knowledge or very studious research! Bravo.Great pair of MCs. The chemistry between them was the heart of of it all. You also depicted with desperation of academia and its expectations brilliantly. This was great. Thanks for sharing
Hey Tom,Thank you for reading my latest tale and sharing your thoughts; they’re much appreciated.Concerning your initial comment; this story came together in such a frantic hurry, that I can’t lay claim to either amazing knowledge or lengthy research. The idea simply fell on top of me and I had to dig fast to stop myself being buried under the debris. However, I had great fun putting it together, pleased it rings true and relieved it all makes sense…. :)Take careHH
Even more impressive then :)
Oh my .. a wonderful read and I absolutely love the language and the descriptions. The wildlife .. that was great. The whole thing is great. Keep on writing pal. Bob.
Hey Bob,Thank you for reading my latest story and leaving your encouraging words; they’re much appreciated. Concerning the professor and Earl Grey combination, I think it’s probably one of those natural pairings that paints an image everyone can grasp, however, the trick is to confound that expectation and deliver a surprise. Hopefully, I’ve achieved that in some small way, but all I can do is try….Take care HH
Where ever did you get the inspiration for this story? What a unique take on the prompt!! Lol!! And now there are three of us this week who served Earl Grey in their stories with Professors 😂 Must be a thing!
Long live London Fogs .. a wonderful earl Grey tea drink. I have the same question as you .. exceptional story
