“And now Ben’s coming to the wedding with—I don’t know, some girl from Facebook, and I’m going to look like an idiot going alone. Because I am an idiot. Because I’m the one who dumped him. Christ, I’m an idiot.” Charlie groans and falls over onto the bed.
Outstanding reviews
This is some clever, funny writing, and it delves into the many nuances and spectrums of gender and sexuality without being didactic. The young romance vibe nearly put me off at first (just not my thing) but the humour and smart writing kept me invested. Good stuff.
The theme was interesting. I love what you did - something I'm still struggling with. It's when you keep writing in one scene for a long time, and the readers want to keep reading. I have difficulty just keeping my character in one room for a whole chapter. But you did that beautifully. Great work! Excellent writing.
this was awesome! I dont see a lot of non-cis non-straight characters, and I think this could be a great book someday.
Such a clever tale. Love the ending too, ties it all together nicely.
I was going through old winning stories and this one is amazing. Definitely deserved win!
Thank you! I remember feeling electrified while I was writing it; it's one of the ones that I found easiest, like it was flowing on its own without my help. I'm glad other people love it as much as I do.
:)
It was brave to use gender fluid characters
This was a great story and I really like the characters:)
Thanks; much appreciated!
Woah, what an eccentric story. Very nice and good job making the leaderboards with just one story! It's very impressive...
Thank you so much! I had two wins before Reedsy switched to this format, though, so not as impressive ^__^
This was amazing! I felt like I was right there with Charlie the whole time. Thank you for being brave and putting this story out there.
Great story! Had fun reading it😊👏🏻
Liked the use of your gender fluid characters and how supportive Scarlett is of Charlie and her journey.
Thank you so much! I guess I'm just that writer who adds trans fiction to Reedsy every once in a while ^__^

This was such a beautiful message; I love long comments the absolute MOST (more to love!) and I'm so grateful you took the time to tell me. I especially appreciate trans people talking to me about this story, because it can feel very lonely being trans on Reedsy as a writer or reader. I'm still slightly shocked this won, because at the time I just felt like I was writing something only trans people could enjoy-- though, of course, at the end of the day that's enough for me. Thank you so much!
Hello!Congratulations on the win! I know I’m a bit late to the party. :) I loved so much about this story: first of all I loved the point of view because it helped me feel like I was really at the wedding, second of all I loved the descriptions of the different fashion of the guests, and lastly, I love that we didn’t even get to see the wedding. That fact made me laugh. :) my favorite line was: You’ve already made this wedding situation completely about you. NICE JOB!
I'm so glad you liked it, and don't worry at all about timing-- the wonderful thing about writing is that someone can pick it up any time and it'll hopefully still be just as fun to read. I spend all that time holed up scribbling, wondering if anybody will like the thing at all, and then I get comments years later! It really makes all the alone time worth it ^_^ Thank you so much for your lovely and detailed comment!
ohhhh the pronouns. the narration not using any pronouns for charlie (only having pronouns when portia says he/him) until of course the last line... delicious and also so difficult to pull off! i've played with No Pronouns Usage characters and it's a tricky line to tread but you managed it with gorgeous subtlety.
THANK YOU! I really appreciate the pronouns appreciation; I can't wait to do something weird with them again ^_^
Awesome :D
Thanks! Glad you liked it!

Perfect.
Very sweet of you to say! Thanks for sending in an ask, too; I'm really honored you thought to ask me for advice ^__^
No problem! You’re an exceptionally talented writer :)
I get this so much- sure I'm going the other way but.. Yeah. This was a wonderful read, thank you.
Thank you! And don't worry, it doesn't matter where you're going; trans fiction is for everyone ^_^
Of course! And yeah, that's true.
I really dig this story. I'm going to assign it in my Intro to Fiction class this winter.
Thanks so much for commenting here; again, really means the world to think students out there will read my work in class. Absolutely incredible honor.
Wow, Yves. , seriously this is amazing. The plot has been well constructed and it keeps its readers intrigued the whole time. There are multiple emotion figments that have been compiled beautifully in a whole puzzle. Loved it!It really deserved the win. Congrats.
Thank you so much! I'm glad people are still reading this; it's a piece that's retained its place in my heart ever since I wrote it. Hope you find more fiction you like in the new year ^__^
I was scrolling through some winner stories and I am so glad I stopped to read this one. I am looking forward to reading more stories from you.Happy new year!
